Council Bluffs Interstate System Improvements

Other projects

In addition to the CBIS improvements project, other roadway construction projects are underway in the Council Bluffs area. A description of these projects and information about the duration and closures associated with each is provided below.

South Omaha bridge (U.S. 275 bridge over the Missouri River)

South Omaha BridgeThe project to replace the existing bridge is currently underway. The new bridge is being constructed north of the existing bridge, so in the early stages of work traffic will not be impacted. In August 2008, the intersection of U.S. 275 (Missouri Avenue) and 13th Street will be closed for approximately 60 days for reconstruction. Traffic in Iowa will be detoured to Interstate 80. When the intersection work is complete, motorists will be able to use U.S. 275 until September 2009. At that time, the roadway will be closed again to demolish the old bridge and construct the Nebraska approach section. The closure will last until May 2010, when the new bridge is projected to be complete and open to traffic.

U.S. 275 South Omaha Bridge Road

The final year of the project to expand U.S. 275 to a four lane highway will begin the first week of April, 2008. Most of the construction activity will be between 24th Street and East Manawa Drive. This year’s work will consist of removal of existing pavement, grading and paving of the new eastbound lanes. Two lanes of traffic will be maintained during the project.
